HistoryMumbai was founded as an official city in the 1600's by the British and the Portuguese, although the area where the city was founded was inhabited by humans for a long time before. Before the founding of the city in 4th Century B.C. , the Mumbai area was ruled by systematic rulers that lead to the expansion of the Maurya Empire.
The Maurya Empire fell in 2nd century B.C., the area then became a crucial trading port for the whole western part of India. The city was known back then as Sopara. From this port, India traded with Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Eastern Africa and Arabia |

Mumbai used to be home of the Koli fisher folks, which have left a presence on the shorelines of Mumbai today. Now, Mumbai is a trend-setting city that is innovative and creating new ideas everyday. Mumbai has been colonized by many different groups and tribes which can be associated with it's diversity today.
Mumbai used to be the entry point of India so people from Europe could get into India. Educated Westerners came to the city, educating the people in the area. Most India cities at the time had shrines or a royal court but Mumbai didn't. This might be because of the westerners coming into Mumbai. Mumbai is a combination of seven islands that have been joined together. The British have set up colonies in the city by sailing from Britain. The elevation of the city varies from 10 meters in the city to 450 meters in northern parts of Mumbai. |
Bombay |
Mumbai was originally called Bombay until the name was officially changed to Mumbai. Some have even said that Mumbai was the original name even before the city was called Bombay. Mumbai is also considered to be the largest metropolis in India.
